about
A 2000-year-old 'Ice Princess' was excavated in 1993 on the high Ukok plateau in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia. Perfectly preserved, her 3-foot felt head-dress was decorated with tiny gold-leaf long-necked birds, symbolising the 'Tree of Life'. She wore a wild silk blouse, red woollen skirt, and soft leather thigh-length riding boots, and her tattooed arms bore Scythian-style dancing animals. When Russian archaeologists took her to Novosibirsk, Altaians say that the earthquake that followed expressed the anger of their sacred land. They believe the Princess is Ochy Bala, an epic heroine, spirit of their land and priestess of their people, and they passionately argue for her return.
lyrics
Lady of the Mountains,
Turn your face to me,
I’ve travelled the seven continents,
I’ve travelled the seven seas
Spirit of the Altai,
Touch me across the years,
Teach me your ancient ways,
Help me stem your people’s tears.
Chorus: Rise up Ochy Bala,
Who slaughtered Khan Tadi,
Born of the sun and the moonlit land,
You set your people free.
Angel of the Altai,
Spirit of the Land,
Princess of the Plateau,
Raped by a foreign hand,
Elks and griffons gambol
On the canvas of your skin,
Free to dance while others glance
At the prison that you’re in.
Priestess of the people,
Two thousand years you lay in grace,
In your woollen gown and long felt crown.
Frozen in time and space.
Spirit of the Altai,
Your land is torn with rage,
That so highly born you were rudely torn,
From your ancient resting place.
Chorus: Rise up Ochy Bala,
Who slaughtered Khan Tadi,
Born of the sun and the moonlit land,
You set your people free.
Rise up Ochy Bala, eezi of the land,
Rise up Ochy Bala, take your sword in hand,
Rise up Ochy Bala, your grazing herds still roam,
Rise up Ochy Bala, rise up, and come back home.

The superlatives and adjectives stack up and seem all too obvious to give this piece of work the credit it deserves, in short bad poetry would devalue the purity of the project; but lets check them off, haunting, moving, achingly beautiful, soulful, unsettling, emotive, heart-breaking and warmly consoling, a thing of profound beauty- everything a grown-up audience could want from a grown up collection. Thank you Angeline. Neil S. Reddy
David Carrol joins with friends from Fairport Convention and Gryphon to bring us this absolutely lovely progressive folk release. Comprised of mostly traditional tunes, along with stellar covers of David Cousins' "The Battle," and Andy Barnes’ “The Last Leviathan.” Utilizing both period (crumhorns, cor anglaise, uilleann pipes, fiddle, tabla, bouzouki and dulcimer) to modern (bass, drums and electric guitar) instrumentation, this is timeless and thoroughly enjoyable.
